Unguarded

During the years we were apart

I came back with a dread
That I would face the snide remarks
The jealousy and the comparison
And all the nosy questions
That’d been thrown at me before
And the aggression I’d heard and seen
Prompted me to stay away
I drew an invisible line
I spoke in a different language
I kept my face straight
Talked as little as I could
My sides were protected
My fearful mind had painted
You as a monster!
And to keep my worldly freedom preserved
I must prevent you
From getting too close
That was what I thought
The initial stance I took
When I came back
To see you
There were moments that I felt
We were almost strangers

From anxieties and the worry
That we no longer
Knew each other
Each’d been settled in its own way
